Once a tree has been felled, you’re usually left with a stump. It might not look like much, but it can be a trip hazard, get in the way of mowing and even sprout new growth. There are two main ways to deal with it: stump grinding and full stump removal. Here’s how they compare and which one makes sense for your garden.
What is stump grinding?
Stump grinding uses a specialist machine with a rotating cutting wheel. It grinds the stump down below ground level, turning it into wood chippings. The main roots are left in the ground to rot down naturally over time.
Modern stump grinders are compact enough to fit through most side gates, which makes them ideal for back gardens in Solihull, Acocks Green and across the West Midlands.
What is stump removal?
Full stump removal means digging out the stump and as much of the root system as possible. It usually needs heavier machinery, leaves a large hole and causes much more disturbance to your lawn, patio or borders.
Stump grinding vs stump removal at a glance
| Stump grinding | Full stump removal | |
|---|---|---|
| What’s left | Main roots left to rot below ground | Stump and most roots taken out |
| Garden disruption | Low, small area of chippings | High, large hole to fill |
| Access needed | Fits through most side gates | Usually needs larger machinery |
| Time on site | Usually quicker | Usually longer |
| Best for | Most domestic gardens, lawns and replanting nearby | Building work, new foundations or driveways on the spot |
Which one do you need?
For most homeowners, stump grinding is the better option. It’s quicker, tidier and less disruptive. Once the chippings are cleared, you can top the area with soil and re-seed it, or plant something new nearby.
Full removal is usually only needed if you’re building on the spot, such as an extension, patio or driveway, where remaining roots could cause problems.
Why not just leave the stump?
Leaving a stump in place can cause a few problems:
- New shoots growing from the stump, especially with species like sycamore and willow
- Fungi and pests moving in as the wood decays (see our guide to mushrooms around trees)
- A trip hazard for children and visitors
- Getting in the way of mowing, landscaping or a new lawn
