How to choose a tree surgeon in Coventry and Solihull

Tree work is one of the most dangerous jobs a homeowner can hire someone for. Choosing the wrong person can mean a damaged tree, a damaged house or even a legal problem. Before you book anyone in Coventry, Solihull or Nuneaton, run through these seven checks.

1. Ask about qualifications

A professional tree surgeon should hold recognised certificates. Look for NPTC (City & Guilds) tickets in chainsaw use, tree climbing and aerial rescue. For larger or more technical jobs, an arboriculture qualification such as City & Guilds Level 3 shows real training, not just someone with a chainsaw.

2. Check their insurance

Ask to see proof of public liability insurance before any work starts. If a branch falls on your conservatory or a neighbour’s car, their insurance should cover it, not yours.

3. Read reviews and look at past work

Check independent review sites such as Checkatrade and Google, and ask to see photos of similar jobs. A good company will happily show you before-and-after pictures from gardens like yours.

4. Get a written quote after a site visit

Be wary of anyone who gives a firm price over the phone without seeing the tree, or who turns up unannounced offering to “do your tree today”. A proper quote should be in writing and list exactly what work is included.

5. Make sure they check for TPOs

Many trees in Solihull and Coventry are protected by Tree Preservation Orders or sit in conservation areas. Working on a protected tree without consent can lead to a fine, and it’s usually the tree owner who is responsible. A good tree surgeon will check this with the council for you. Not sure if you need permission? Read our guide: Do I need permission to cut down a tree?

6. Ask what happens to the waste

Confirm that branches, logs and chippings will be cleared and disposed of properly. Ask whether stump grinding is included or priced separately.

7. Look for good industry practice

A professional will talk you through why a cut is needed and won’t recommend “topping” a healthy tree, which can weaken it. They’ll also time work to avoid disturbing nesting birds where possible.
